|July 30, 2011: South Sudan celebrated its first Martyrs’ Day. The day observes and reminds of the great sacrifice made by the heroes and heroines of liberation who paid the ultimate price for the liberation of the country. President Salva Kiir Mayardit made a public address in this regard. He called upon the youth to leave tribalism and start working on the construction of the country. He called upon for the improvement of agriculture which feeds the country. Addressing the armed forces, he asked them to remain disciplined and respect human rights. The day coincides with the day Dr. John Garang de Mabior, the late leader of the SPLM/A, died in a helicopter crash on his way back to South Sudan from a meeting in Uganda in 2005.|
