President Kiir gives nod for Abyei interim administration
November 9, 2012
President of South Sudan Salva Kiir Mayardit has given his approval for the formation of an Abyei interim administration with a Misseriya possibly appointed as speaker of the region’s assembly. Luka Biong Deng, Co-Chair of the Abyei Joint Oversight Committee said at a press conference that the approval was given in the form of clear administrative directives. This move has come in accordance with the Temporary Arrangements for the Administration and Security of the Abyei Area that was signed on 20 June 2011. The Sudanese Army seized Abyei at that time.
According to the arrangement, Juba will be appointing the Chief Administrator while Khartoum will select the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Abyei Area Legislative Council will have 20 members, 12 of whom will be nominated by the Government of South Sudan and 8 members by the Government of Sudan.
An earlier arrangement between the two neighboring countries is that South Sudan will nominate the speaker and the Sudan to nominate the deputy. But now, South Sudan will nominate the deputy speaker while Sudan will nominate the Speaker.
A referendum was called upon for the formation of an interim administration.
