South Sudan's Democratic Movement
The South Sudan's Democratic Movement (SSDM/A) is formed by George Athor after he left the Sudan People's Liberation Army. Athor was in the position of Lieutenant General when he left. Prior to the independence of South Sudan, George Athor was an independent candidate for leadership of the Joglei state.
After Athor's loss in the 2010 gubernatorial elections in Jonglei state, he formed the South Sudan's Democratic Movement and orchestrated several attacks against SPLA's bases. Athor reportedly agreed for a ceasefire before the January 2011 referendum. However, reports surfaced in media that he is responsible for 200 people that were killed in February 2011. Athor was killed by SPLA on December 19, 2011.
Deputy Head of SSDA Maj. Gen. Bapiny Monytuil, blamed that Uganda president Yoweri Musevini conspired against Athor and helped the SPLA in killing Athor. The Ugandian authorities denied the allegations.
