The Elders

The Elders is an independent team of leaders using their collective experience and influence for peace, justice and human rights worldwide.

It was founded in 2007 by former South African President, Nelson Mandela. The organization had membership of renowned leaders such as Jimmy Carter, Martti Ahtisaari, Ela Bhatt, Lakhdar Brahimi, Gro Brundtland, Gra├ža Machel and Mary Robinson.

Nobel Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu is on its chair.

In May 2012, The Elders estimated that as many as 300,000 farmers in Blue Nile and South Kordofan states are deprived of farming because of tense situation in the region.
